What is a percussion?
Percussion is not a single instrument, rather a whole family of instruments. Each student will begin by learning basic percussion fundamentals on a practice pad (or snare drum) and a bell set. The students will quickly move on to learn other percussion instruments such as the timpani, bass drum, cymbals, etc. allowing the student to become a well rounded percussionist. Characteristics Needed Percussionists must have a exceptional coordination when it comes to fine motor skills. Most of the time their hands, and even feet from time to time, will be playing different patterns at the same time. We evaluate interested students on these skills before we can pursue their interest in percussion. It has also shown that students who have shown a strength in mathematical areas tend to excel in percussion as well. Students are often the only ones playing their specific type of percussion instrument in a concert, almost like a solo all the time! Confidence and practice is key to their success. What role does the percussionist play in band? The percussion section is the heartbeat of the band. They provide that rhythmic pulse for everyone to follow. In addition they have a great influence on the style and effectiveness of the band. Other details The percussion bell kit, pictured on this page with the black suitcase-style case, is an instrument that is rented from the store, not provided by the school. This basic kit will provide the instruments needed for the percussionist to practice. As the students begin learning a wider variety of instruments we do not ask that anyone purchase any other instruments, we will have them at school. However, the bell kits can still be used to practice the fundamentals and patterns needed. |
