What is a Clarinet?
The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family. Sound is produced by a vibrating single reed which is the same sound producing method as the saxophone. The clarinet is a very popular instrument for beginners because it is fairly easy to learn. Characteristics Needed The clarinet is a fairly forgiving instrument and can accommodate many different players. However, students with a significant underbite will have difficulty forming their mouth correctly on the mouthpiece. Although rare, students with very narrow fingertips have difficulty covering the holes in the instrument to produce the correct notes. What role does the Clarinet play in band? Clarinets play a critical role in bands, symphony orchestras, jazz groups and small instrumental groups. The clarinet can be a feature voice, playing the main musical lines as well as being a supporting instrument. It is, perhaps, one of the most versatile of all the instruments in the band. Other details The clarinet is a rental instrument that is not provided by the school. Often one of the larger classes in the band, it is one of the easier woodwinds to play. The instrument case is fairly small, about the size of a textbook, making it easy to transport when not in use. |
