What is an oboe?
Oboe is a double reed instrument. A double reed consists of two flattened blades of bamboo that, when placed between the lips, produce sound through the vibrations of one blade against the other. This creates a sound that is very lyrical, almost voice-like. Colleges and Universities seek out oboe players and often issue scholarships and grants because good oboist are valuable! Characteristics Needed Oboe players with a significant overbite or underbite will have issues producing a clear sound because equal pressure all around the reed is required. Students with significantly short fingers may also have difficulties reaching some of the keys. While the oboe can be a little more challenging for some, we have consistently seen students who have a good desire to try and have a high level of logic and reasoning skills tend to be fantastic oboe players. What role does the oboe play in band? In the band, the oboist plays a very important role, it usually carries the melody with its lyrical and color. As the oboist gets older they will have the opportunity to be heard as the solo instrument in the most emotional sections of music.
