What is a French Horn?
The French Horn is a unique member of the brass family that requires the player to use one hand inside the bell while the other operates the valves. It is played by vibrating your lips against the mouthpiece to produce the sound. The notes are then changed by varying the lip pressure and pressing valves with the fingers. Colleges and Universities seek out French Horn players and often issue scholarships and grants because good players are valuable! Characteristics Needed A slight overbite is okay for the horn, but an underbite can severely hinder progress and development on French Horn. Because the French Horn can be a little more challenging for some, we have consistently seen students who are self-motivated and have a good ear for pitch discrimination. Piano playing experience would be beneficial, but not required, to play French horn. What role does the French Horn play in band? The French horn plays many roles in the band. It can play melody as well as harmony and plays well with both the brass and woodwind instruments. Other Details The French Horn is an instrument that is provided by the school for a single $40 deposit to cover cleaning and maintenance. Students are required to purchase their own mouthpiece. |
