What is a bassoon?
Bassoon is a double reed instrument. A double reed consists of two flattened blades of bamboo that, when placed between the lips, produce sound through the vibrations of one blade against the other. This creates a sound that is one of the lowest sounds in the woodwind family. Colleges and Universities seek out bassoon players and often issue scholarships and grants because good bassoonists are valuable! Characteristics Needed Bassoon players with a significant overbite or underbite will have issues producing a clear sound because equal pressure all around the reed is required. A slight overbite can actually be a benefit. Students will need a medium or greater hand span to reach all of the keys. While the bassoon can be a little more challenging for some, we have consistently seen students who have a good desire to try and have a high level of logic and reasoning skills tend to be fantastic bassoon players. What role does the bassoon play in band? In the band, the bassoon provides much of the foundation of the sound that we build all the rest of the band sounds from. Because of the unique sound it provides, there are also opportunities to provide a lead role in the music from time to time. Other details The bassoon is an instrument that is provided by the school for a single $40 deposit to cover cleaning and maintenance. Colleges and Universities seek out bassoon players and often issue scholarships and grants because good oboist are valuable! |
